    The OPCTP provides training in the ministry of Pastoral Care offering courses, special events, information sessions, workshops, etc. in Ottawa and out-of-town.

    About Our Courses

    The Basic Training Course

    The Basic Course consists of 25 hours of training during one afternoon or evening a week for 10 weeks. Courses are offered in the Spring and Fall in wheel-chair accessible facilities in eastern and western areas of Ottawa. Out-of-town courses also take place when requested.

      The training includes:

        Introduction to Pastoral Care
        Active Listening
        Spiritual Needs and Pastoral Identity
        Grief through losses
        Ministry with Dying
        Visiting Hospitals, Institutions/Homes
        Ministry with the Aging Persons
        Sharing and Learning
        Care for the Caregiver and Pastoral Care Teams
        Celebrating our Community and our Call

    A certificate will be issued at the end of the course for those who attend 8 or more of the 10 sessions.

    It is important to attend the first two sessions. If, for some reason, you miss the first two classes you will need to re-register for a future course.

    Advanced Courses

    At the request of many participants who have completed the 10-week Basic Course, we have developed an advanced 4-part series. This course is not offered every year.

        Pastoral Care with those who are Depressed
        Pastoral Care in our Multi-Cultural Society
        Pastoral Care with Teenagers

    Co-ordinators' Event

    The Co-ordinators' Event is an annual get-together for co-ordinators (or delegates) of Pastoral/Spiritual Care Teams of churches, long-term care facilites or retirement homes/residences. It is an opportunity to share ideas, discuss concerns and offer tips and helpful resources. It is a 2.5 hour Saturday morning event.

    Continuing Education Events

    Continuing Education Events are offered in the Spring and Fall in wheel-chair accessible facilities in eastern and western areas of Ottawa. These events consists of an afternoon or evening two-hour session to learn more about a topic related to Pastoral Care.

    The purpose of these events is to provide people who have taken the 10-week Basic Course with more information and opportunities to network and purchase books related to Pastoral Care.

    Registration is not limited to those who have taken the Basic Course... others who are interested in the topic being presented may attend.
